England and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a pool once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
