British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
