Our Top Album of the Year: The Artist's Lux Takes the Top Spot.

Initially, this album could seem more like an arduous university examination than the latest pop album from an artist whose last hit featured an international K-pop star. Broken into 4 different sections and sung in 13 languages, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged album investigating feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, frequently through the perspective of various female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward here, carried by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among a long list of collaborators. The pure ambition by itself renders the efforts of other pop stars seem quite modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That Lux manages to escape dry intellectual posturing feels nearly a miracle, and complete praise belonging to Rosalía. While it's not her first album to blend the past with modern styles, the stakes are far greater here, and the tightrope walk far more precarious. The element that truly elevates this fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich compositions, and engrained theatricality, is a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary Björk during her peak, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener up in its tornado. When she is tearing your heart in two, the listener still want to be alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during the stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for several minutes. Then, everything falls silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds down with cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts into the frenetic single featuring racing strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener never exactly understand—nor want to know—what you will go next."

Almost every song ends at a totally different place from where it began. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a delicate symphony before disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her previous trap-infused style starts off dark and sinister, with prowling vocals, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly choir arrive to soften its rough edges.

The Balance Of Art & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on the album is navigating the line of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is no surprise that the album has achieved the artist's first release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in the English language builds around a refrain that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spins skyward. That feat is echoed on another powerful track that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the singing carry a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism for glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its own built-in excess. It is an abundant source of buried treasure that takes patience to fully mine but never seem like a chore. Where some major pop albums of the year seemed like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet at which the characters at it, some tipsy on holy drink, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
